Hong Kong Film Festival Makes A Comeback At Cinema Akil
Updated on 08 November 2023

The Hong Kong Film Festival is returning for its second edition in the UAE, taking place at Cinema Akil, the only independent cinema in the country. This festival, known as 'Asian Cinerama: Hong Kong Film Festival,' will feature a blend of Hong Kong's most recent film offerings and beloved classics. The festival will take place from 10 to 16 November showcasing the past, present, and future of Hong Kong cinema with a total of seven films across a range of genres including action-packed martial arts to thrillers and romantic dramas.

Certain movies will be shown with the presence of their cast and crew, providing an ideal chance for film enthusiasts to engage in informative question-and-answer sessions about beloved cultural treasures from Hong Kong.

Movies To Be Screened

The seven-day festival will begin on 10 November with the screening of the thriller 'Mad Fate' (2023). Directed by Soi Cheang, the opening film promises an exhilarating journey as it follows a fortune-teller's endeavour to alter a killer's fate.

Hong Kong Film Festival will also treat local audiences to 'A Light Never Goes Out' (2022), the latest film by director Anastasia Tsang, which is an ode and testament to Hong Kong’s infamous neon signs and its makers.

Next in line, the festival will feature 'The Narrow Road' (2022) by director Lam Sum, delivering a story of love, forgiveness, and human strength during challenging circumstances. Additionally, the event will include 'Where the Wind Blows' (2022), a gripping true crime thriller set in the 1970s, directed by Philip Yung.

Bringing in the latest releases of Hong Kong, Cinema Akil will be presenting 'Back Home' (2023) by director Nate Ki, a chilling exploration of reconstructed memories that will give film lovers an insight into the protagonist’s family dynamics, spanning genres such as horror, thriller, and drama.

Damian Lee, Director-General of the HKETO in Dubai, said “We are thrilled to support the second edition of Hong Kong Film Festival and promote Hong Kong Cinema to audiences in Dubai. After the remarkable success of the first edition, we look forward to reintroducing the latest generation of Hong Kong filmmaking talents to share their creative experiences in the UAE.”
