Updated on 19 June 2023

Yoga is a spiritual and well-being practice, followed by many around the world.

The word 'yoga' is derived from Sanskrit and means 'to join or unite'. Known for helping in raising awareness in oneself, yoga is used to calm the mind from worldly distractions and reach a state of peace.

The origins of yoga can be traced back to ancient India, with the date it was founded unknown. However, forms of yoga can be found in Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism.

Every 21 June, International Yoga Day is marked, to highlight the benefits of the practice on a person's mental and physical state.

As yoga is a popular globally, in 2014, the United Nations declared 21 June as International Yoga Day, after a proposal for the day to be marked was put forward by the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi.

Variations of the ancient practice are still followed in India, as well as in various countries in the world.

Yoga has many health benefits, that promote overall health and well-being. Through yoga, people practicing can improve flexibility and strength, reduce weight, improve balance, reduce joint pain and also live a healthier lifestyle.

To commemorate the day, on Wednesday, 21 June, Danube Sports World on Sheikh Zayed Road is hosting a free for all event, where people can gather to practice yoga.

Running from 7pm to 8pm, the session will be led by Indian guru Ram along with Anis Sajan, Vice Chairman of Danube Group and yoga enthusiast.

Attendees can also enjoy exciting giveaways and food and drinks that will nourish the body and soul.
