things to do concierge CONCIERGE TIPS: JOELI WAQA
Concierge Tips: Joeli Waqa
Updated on 07 August 2023

There is no denying that Dubai is a multicultural destination, that can make anyone feel welcome. As the city is a melting pot for diversity, visitors can explore traditions and cultures from around the globe, as well as Emirati culture at its finest.

Even with all the planning done beforehand, there is so much to see and do in Dubai, that a little help from residents and locals to find hidden gems is aleays welcome.

Concierges at any hotel play a vital role in acting as an insider to all the amazing places visitors should definitely check out, as well as cater to their needs by arranging transportation and making reservations.

Joeli Waqa, Guest Experience Expert at the Concierge Desk at Lapita Hotel, Dubai Parks and Resorts, has been working as a concierge for over two years.

Originally from Fiji Islands, Joeli Waqa is the go-to person for many at the hotel, to get recommendations on places to visit in the city.

In this feature, Joeli Waqa shares with Discover Dubai, some of the hidden destinations of Dubai that are a must-visit, as well as delicious food choices to tuck into.

What two tourist activities would you recommend for a visitor if they are visiting over the next two months?

I would recommend Palm Jumeirah as a top tourist destination for those visiting Dubai in the next two months. From relaxing at luxurious beach resorts to dining at exquisite restaurants on the man-made palm tree-shaped island, it is a must-see spot that makes itself known from the moment you are landing in Dubai. In addition, thrill lovers should head over to Dubai Parks and Resort, the Middle East’s largest theme park destination. With over 100 thrilling rides, indoor attractions and entertainment, the destination comprises Motiongate Dubai, Legoland Dubai Theme Park, Legoland Water Park, Legoland Hotel, Lapita Hotel, Neon Galaxy, Riverland Dubai, and soon the world’s first Real Madrid theme park.

What would you suggest as a must-try, must-visit and a must-eat for all visitors?

Must Try: Any of the diverse entertainment venues in Dubai, from indoor skiing to thrilling waterparks such as Wild Wadi and Legoland Water Park, this city has it all.

Must-Visit: While Burj Khalifa is a common staple on every itinerary, we recommend trying out the Inside Burj Al Arab tour for an authentic luxury experience in Dubai. This exclusive tour is the only way to get a glimpse inside Dubai’s most iconic hotel, and while there, make sure to try their gold cappuccino.

Must-Eat: Every tourist must try authentic Emirati cuisine when visiting Dubai. Some must-haves include rigag (thin bread topped with honey, eggs and cheese), chebab (Emirati pancakes), balaleet (sweet vermicelli dish served with an omelette), harees (a porridge-like dish made with wheat and meat), machboos (spiced rice cooked in chicken broth), tharid (lamb and vegetable stew, served over bread), luqaimat (Arabic dumplings covered in either date syrup, honey or sugar) and more.

What is a hidden gem that you would suggest is worth visiting or trying?

A hidden gem worth exploring in Dubai is The Green Planet, Dubai’s only indoor rainforest. The magnificent four-story biodome, located in City Walk, houses 3,000 plants and animals from across the globe, from the cute to the deadly.

Another must-try is a desert safari. There is no better way to properly experience the Dubai landscape in a unique setting, as some safaris include entertainment, such as belly dancing and delicious fireside dinners, under the starry sky.

What is your favourite thing about Dubai?

My favourite thing about Dubai is its multicultural environment, and the vibrant cultural exchanges it fosters. The city's diversity allows for a blend of traditions, customs, and cuisines from around the world.

What is the one must-do at Lapita Hotel for a guest?

Guests must experience Lapita Dubai’s array of delicious dining venues, including Hikina, the pan-Asian fine dining concept, Ari, our Mediterranean poolside restaurant and bar and, Kalea, our all-day dining international buffet with a Polynesian twist. In addition, guests should stay for our Polynesian Themed Nights at Kalea to experience the Ahi Ahi ritual every evening at sunset. Our resident Fijian artists perform a traditional Polynesian dance during the ceremony, which begins with the blowing of a traditional conch shell, and is followed by the lighting of torches. Guests can also enjoy the rhythmic beating of sacred drums, accompanied by powerful chanting.
